HOW DO I LEARN THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE?
Private lessons with a certified teacher is the best way to learn the Alexander Technique. Introductions to basic principles of the Technique are also taught in group classes, workshop and online settings.
HOW DOES THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE WORK?
Alexander Technique is an educational process which helps to eliminate inefficient habits by raising one’s awareness and exploring alternative choices for movements.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A LESSON?
A teacher works with students’ unique habits that have developed over years of misuse. Then introduces them to new ways of thinking and using their bodies in order to relieve pain, reduce stress, and prevent future injury.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO AN ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE LESSON?
Comfortable, non restrictive clothing. Skirts and sleeveless tops are less ideal.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TAKE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE LESSONS?
The number of lessons you need depends on your goals, interests and physical condition. Most people takes weekly lessons during the first three to six months, then monthly lessons or yearly refresher lessons. F.M. Alexander suggested that a basic course of thirty lessons was necessary for an individual to begin successfully applying the Technique on their own.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?
Many people feel positive improvement almost immediately. Consistent lessons will offer gradual change with long-lasting results. Within the first 6 to 10 lessons you will experience the benefits of Alexander Technique lessons in your daily life. Like learning a musical instrument or a foreign language, time is needed to fully integrate new skills. As your understanding grows, you will be able to apply the skills to a wider range of activities.
DO I NEED A TEACHER OR CAN I READ A BOOK AND LEARN ON MY OWN?
Reading books and watching videos about the Alexander Technique is highly encouraged. For best results, work directly with a certified teacher who can help you to be aware of unconscious habits while providing alternative ways to reduce pain, tension and stress.

WILL LESSONS CONFLICT IF I HAVE PHYSICAL THERAPY SESSIONS?
No. Alexander Technique lessons complement to physical therapy sessions. Many doctors are very enthusiastic, supportive and regard it as an added benefit to those working through recovery.
