MY STORY

Hello, I am Aik Hooi. I have always been seeking a mind-body somatic method to enhance the quality of my piano performance, at the same time reducing stress and injury. When I am 22, I was diagnosed with bursitis elbow. At that time, I couldn’t move my left arm due to the swelling of my elbow and had intense pain which affected my undergraduate studies in piano performance. In 2011, I move to NYC and was introduced to the Alexander Technique. I realized that it was not what I do but how I do things that were causing the discomfort. Alexander Technique is a practical and logical method that helped to release undue tension in my body; resulting in a more fluid, less rigidity and freedom in my performance as well as leading a pain-free daily life.

TRAINING AND BIOGRAPHY

I am a pianist and a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique from the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) after completing a 3 year/1600-hours training program at The American Center for the Alexander Technique (ACAT) in New York City. I specialize in working with performers, addressing issues such as posture, repetitive strain injuries, and performance anxiety. I travel extensively, giving workshops in higher education institutions, including Columbia University, NYU Tisch School of Arts, The New School, Fordham University, James Madison University, New York Open Center, Gary Schocker Flute Masterclass, University Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA, as well as Mahidol University and Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand. Currently, I own a private practice in New York City teaching piano and the Alexander Technique.

I believe that each person has the ability to restore their natural poise with proper guidance. Through our Alexander Technique sessions, you will discover better physical coordination, reduce mental stress and reconnect with your body for a more graceful, effervescent lifestyle.
